5 Questions to Ask Your Potential Painting Contractor

Sandblasting in wilmington de

When you have a big (or small) painting project that you want done right, hiring a professional painting contractor is a great idea. Employment of painters is growing faster than the average for all occupations as it is projected to grow 20% from 2012 to 2022. With so many painting contractors out there, it can be difficult to choose someone who is right for your painting project. Because of this, it is recommended that you interview your potential painting contractor candidates before hiring. Finding the right painter means asking the right questions, so here 5 questions you should definitely ask your potential painter during the interview process:

1. How will you prep for the job?

A great painting contractor will know exactly how to prep your house or business (if you’re looking for commercial painting contractors) for your painting project. If it is an exterior job, prep may involve removing flaking paint, caulking and priming beforehand and possibly even sandblasting to ensure a quality finish and long lasting paint job. Make sure your painting contractor can give you a run-down of the prep process and an estimate of how long it might take.

2. How much will the job cost?

It is important to get an estimate from all of your candidates, as price can be a big part of your final selection!

3. What equipment and paint do you use?

Does your painting contractor use a high quality paint, or are they cutting corners in this area? This is important to know before hiring. Also, when painting drywall, woodwork, cabinets, and doors, a true pro will use extenders. A pro painter will also most likely prefer a five gallon bucket with a roller grid instead of a roller pan because they hold more paint and rarely tip over, which means less potential for a big mess.

4. Do you have references?

A great painter will be able to provide for you a list of past customers who have been satisfied with their work.

5. Do you have a license and insurance?

Painting contractors should hold a valid license from the state that ensures that they meet the basic qualifications of a painting contractor. They should also have an insurance policy so that you are not the one held responsible if a painter gets hurt working on your property. It is a good idea to ask for documentation of these things, as well.

These five questions are just a start, there are other things you can ask any potential painting contractor depending on the type of job you have. For example, you may want to ask how big their crew is, how long it will take them to complete the job, how they plan to clean up, etc. Remember, finding the right painting contractor means asking great questions, and a true professional will not hesitate to answer them well.
