If your home or business has been broken into, you know it can be traumatizing experience. Unfortunately, over 2 million homes are broken into every year in the United States, most of those through forced entry. This means properly secured doors and windows can be what prevents your home from being burglarized. If you have been a victim of theft and need door installation or repair, or if you are concerned and are looking for an upgrade, there are some things you should keep in mind.
Commercial Door Locks
There are more advanced locks made for commercial establishments and businesses. These locks often require different types of keys or number entry to open. They aren’t easily broken into, but they also can be expensive and aren’t particularly made for home use. That being said, if you have special need for one, you can likely find a business that knows how to install commercial door locks and should be willing to install one for you. Look for local companies or online businesses that deal in commercial replacement doors and door installation and see if they’ll be able to accommodate you.
Installing a Door Yourself
It actually isn’t too difficult to place a door on its hinges as long as you have an extra hand available. If you are just replacing a standard door, and don’t have to worry about any commercial door locks or anything else complex, the job is fairly self-explanatory and you should be able to buy a door from the nearest local or chain home improvement store. After that, it’s just a matter of screwing in the hinges and mounting the door along with a partner for help lifting. If you’re a total beginner at home improvement, we’d suggest looking online to see if this job is for you, asking friends or family who might know more, or hiring an outside source to mount the door for you, but it should be a simple enough job.
Extra Protection
A properly installed deadbolt, along with making sure your windows are closed, locked and secured, can do a lot to protect your home from forced entry. In place of advanced protection like commercial door locks, for your home you will likely be just fine with a normal lock and a deadbolt. 34% of all break-ins happen through the front door, so don’t underestimate how much a simple solution such as a deadbolt can do to help.
