The Dangers of Do-It-Yourself Mold Removal

Mold spores

If you find mold in your home, house mold removal is the best way to keep your family safe from the dangerous effects of household mold and mold spores. If you’re considering performing house mold removal yourself, there are a few things you should consider before you begin.

If you’ve heard that bleach is your best tool when it comes to house mold removal, you’re already operating on false information. Bleach won’t be effective in killing mold on porous surfaces like drywall, plywood, wood planks, insulation backing paper, carpet pads and carpeting. Construction materials that contain cellulose won’t be cleaned easily with bleach either.

A non-bleach home mold removal remedy that includes borax or baking soda may work on non-porous surfaces, and borate-based detergents applied without a rinse can usually kill mold and keep it from growing again.

But even if you manage to find a remedy that works, you’re still putting yourself in danger. As you clean, you’re being exposed to potentially hazardous chemicals as well as dangerous mold. In fact, mold releases spores when you start cleaning, so there’s no telling what you’re breathing in. Add that to the toxic fumes you can create when you mix ammonia with bleach and you’ve got a recipe for disaster.

Even proper ventilation won’t necessarily help. If you choose to use fans to try to air things out, the only thing you’ll do is spread chemicals and mold spores throughout your home.

It’s also likely that you won’t even be able to clean your porous items, like carpets, upholstered furniture, rags, rotten wood and drapes. You’ll likely have to discard most of these. Solid materials like plastic, glass and metal are usually redeemable.

Your best chance at safe and effective mold removal is a professional mold removal expert. It may cost a little more, but you’ll be protecting your home and your health.
